UV Light Helps Duke Hospitals Fight Transmission of Super Bugs

A type of ultraviolet light called UVC is helping hospitals cut transmission of super bugs like MRSA that linger in patient rooms and cause new infections, according to a study by Duke Health researchers. As a result, several UVC machines are now in use at Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital and Duke Raleigh Hospital.

    • The large study, published in The Lancet, finds machines that emit the UV light can cut transmission of four major super bugs by a cumulative 30 percent. The finding is specific to patients who stay overnight in a room where someone with a known positive culture or infection of a drug-resistant organism had previously been treated. “Some of these germs can live in the environment so long that even after a patient with the organism has left the room and it has been cleaned, the next patient in the room could potentially be exposed,” said  Deverick J. Anderson, MD, an infectious disease specialist at Duke and lead investigator of the study. “Infections from one of these bugs are tough to treat and can be truly debilitating for a patient.”
    • During the study, a portable machine called the Tru-D SmartUVC was used to disinfect rooms where patients with the target bacteria had been staying. The machine emits UVC light into the empty room for about 30 minutes. The light bounces and reflects into hard-to-reach areas such as open drawers, and between cabinets and fixtures. The light waves kill bacteria by disrupting their DNA. “We can successfully reduce the risk of germs spreading through the environment through what we call, ‘enhanced disinfection’,” Anderson said. Hospitals have to be strategic to enable extra disinfection time while considering varied discharge times, the demand for patient rooms and availability of the machines.
    • UVC light is just one of numerous methods hospitals can add to standard disinfection regimens to continue to cut infection rates for all pathogens. During the COVID-19 response, Duke continues to routinely use UVC light for all isolation discharge cleaning and as an supplementary measure to assist with “deep cleans” or workrooms, break rooms, and common spaces.

    UV Lamps and Magazines

By Terri, Regional Sales Specialist at Southern Lamps

I have always been fascinated by how UV lamps are used in the process of printing magazines and posters. I have been a big John Wayne fan as long as I can remember, and I recall loving when new magazines were delivered with John Wayne photos and posters. Some of them were of him as the Duke in cowboy wear and some were of him in a suit – it did not matter how he was dressed; the shiny, the glossy photos were great. I would pull them out of the magazine hang them my walls. Music has been a big part of my life and over time photos of the Beatles, The Monkees, Kenny Rogers, Robert Plant, and Led Zeppelin joined the Duke on my walls. Those photos and posters are tucked away in a drawer now, but I still have fond memories of them. I never thought I would end up working with UV lamps, but I am glad to be helping out the magazine and poster printing industry by supplying replacement UV lamps and accessories.

Some jokes to make you smile:

    Why was the computer cold??

    It left its window open

How do pickles enjoy their time off??

    They relish it!!

What did the big flower say to the little flower??

    Hi Bud!!

Fun Facts About Ultraviolet (UV) Light

By Jay, Operations Specialist at Southern Lamps

    • The UV radiation spectrum lies between 400 nanometers (mostly visible to the human eye) and 10 nanometers (X-rays used at hospitals/doctor’s offices and produced by high-temperature services such as the sun and stars).
    • The atmosphere absorbs most of the UV rays from the sun before they reach the surface.
    • Bees can see UV light when it is reflected off the flower petals – This assists them in locating pollen during the pollination process.
    • UV rays cause damage human skin although it is used the health care industry to restore pigmentation to skin that has been damaged.
      • A tan is the skin’s physiological response to the damage that the skin is getting from the UV rays. The skin produces melanin to cover the deeper sections of the skin from getting damaged by UV radiation. Despite possible damage of the skin, low doses of UVB light helps in the synthesis of Vitamin D by the skin
    • The human eye can absorb UV light through the cornea but can cause permanent damage if overexposed.
    • Snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays whereas water and the ground reflects less than 10%. Mountain climbers are usually exposed to high levels of ultraviolet when on top of mountains because of the reflection from the snow and less atmospheric filtering as they are in higher levels of the atmosphere.
    • UV light is known to make bacteria, virus, and mold inactive. This is the reason why UV light is used to sterilize the surgical equipment at the hospital.
    • UV light is used in food processing to eliminate bacteria and other microorganisms. Some companies also use UV light to sterilize their tools and workplaces.

You may be aware that UVC disinfection can be a way to combat COVID-19 but according to the EPA there are many other products that can be used to disinfect against the SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus that causes the disease COVID-19).

Take a look at some of the cleaning products you are currently using, they should have an EPA registration number included on the label. Click here to enter that registration number to see if it meets the criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2 and to learn more about other products, their active ingredients, formulation type, and contact time. Once you choose your preferred product, make sure you are following the steps to effectively disinfect.

  10. Desalination

In many developing countries the availability of drinking water is a growing concern due to population growth and rising living standards. A way to combat this is through desalination of seawater, wastewater, and brackish water. Desalination is a process that removes the mineral components (salt and minerals) from saline water that makes it possible to meet the demand for potable, drinking water.

Desalination is a growing market for both governments and the private sector as water scarcity and water re-use are becoming a more pressing issue around the world. Although desalination currently provides only around 1% of the worlds drinking water this percentage is growing considerably.

UV technology is usually one of the last stages of the water purification process. UV can significantly reduce the TOC (Total Organic Carbons) levels in the water. As the water passes by the UV lamp the wavelengths disperse the water molecules and breaks their bonds. The atoms will automatically couple with the TOC carbon atoms – this combination forms carbon dioxide and water molecules as seen in the diagram below. Then once this process has been completed the oxidizable carbons are destroyed leaving you with clean safe water. Waste water and desalination are just two of the many applications you can use UV technology within the water industry. There is a range of water applications that UV is currently used within such as: drinking water, aquaculture, marine, wastewater, healthcare, packaging and processing, oil and gas, aquatics, horticulture, food and beverage, mining and laboratories.

Contact us today for more information or pricing for any UV lamps, sleeves, o-rings, etc. used within the water industry and desalination process.
