UV Industry of the Month: Aerospace and Defense

UV curable coatings are used in the aerospace and defense industries. These coatings are used in order to meet stringent performance standards.  These standards include adhesion, durability, protection, appearance, and exposure to aggressive fluids.  UV curable coatings are also ideal since the finished product is exposed to temperatures ranging from -65 degrees F to 200 degrees F, high speeds of travel, and corrosion.

UV curable coatings are replacing conventional products that were previously used due to environmental regulations that govern high volatile organic compound (VOC) coatings.  As a result, UV curable products cure quickly which reduces the time and cost of recoating (time between coats, time/cost of aircraft out of service, etc.).  Also, since the items being coated are so large (the environment where they are being coated may vary from laboratory to airplane hangar) the cure when using UV coatings is independent of temperature and humidity.

Did you know that UV lamps are used in the process of apparel printing? UV curable inks can be on many different materials including cotton, synthetics, polyester, and blends. Printing on apparel with UV curable inks ensures an instant cure, decreased production time, zero drying time, and resistance to fading.

  7. Ozone FAQ

Scratching your head about ozone and what it has to do with your UV lamps? Here is some information to help you out!

    What is ozone?

Ozone (O3) is a gas that is produced from ultra-violet light.  It is an odorous, colorless gas that is formed when oxygen is broken down by ultra-violet light or atmospheric electrical discharges.  You can often smell ozone after a lightning storm.  Ozone is naturally present in Earth’s atmosphere (mainly the stratosphere) and can also be produced commercially.

    Is ozone dangerous?

Ozone has a distinctive smell, like chlorine, that can be detectable from 0.1 parts per million.  In the stratosphere, the level of ozone ranges from 2 – 8 parts per million.  Due to a short half-life, ozone quickly reverts to oxygen (O2) and as a result cannot be stored.  In concentrated quantities ozone can cause headaches, burning eyes, and respiratory irritation.  Ozone is created commercially using ozone generators for odor reduction and water purification.

What does ozone have to do with my printing equipment?

Since ozone can be produced from ultra-violet light, it is a by-product of curing.  Most ozone produced by UV lamps dissipates quickly and since a majority of equipment is extracted externally, this ozone does not come into contact anyone.  As a small percentage of print shops use UV equipment that is not extracted, a lamp can be made with a ‘reduced ozone’ quartz.  This version of quartz is costlier and the material decreases the UV output of the lamp resulting in a less efficient lamp.  While this type of lamp is necessary in some situations where you would want to decrease exposure to ozone that is not being extracted out of the building, it is not recommended for use in equipment that is extracted already.  As there is less UV energy emitted to cure while run at the same power, you are paying more money for a lamp that is not as efficient and will waste energy essential getting “less bang for your buck”.

Contact us today for your UV lamp needs! We can make any custom lamp to your requirements including reduced ozone, additive (gallium, iron, lead), amended arc length, etc. in addition to your standard lamp requirements.

  8. UV Industry of the Month: Stormwater Overflow Treatment

Did you know that UV disinfection is used in the process of stormwater overflow treatment?

Stormwater originates during high-levels of precipitation or when snow and ice melts quickly resulting in large volumes of water.  Aside from the danger to life and property from flash flooding, the sudden increase in water can overwhelm drainage and sewage systems, particularly older infrastructure with limited volumetric and hydraulic capacity. Run-off from storm water must be treated to protect nearby ecosystems in order to to ensure dangerous microorganisms don’t end up in waterways or areas where contamination could affect people. Most municipal water treatment plants process stormwater, but due to the unpredictability and speed at which it can occur, new methods of treating the water are needed to replace traditional chlorine dosing.

UV disinfection systems are increasingly being implemented to deal with stormwater, ensuring it can be quickly disinfected and released back into local waterways without it needing to be held in tanks and without harmful by-products seen when chemical methods are used. UV disinfection is also low-cost and has low labor costs in the long term, making it an excellent choice for stormwater treatment.

    Pints for Parks 2018
Southern Lamps, Inc. was recently a 24oz. sponsor for Pints for Parks presented by Junior League of Ocala. The event raised almost $14,000 to help rebuild and improve local parks in our community

Junior League of Ocala has formed a partnership with the Ocala Recreation and Parks Department with the goal of improving the city’s many parks. Building pavilions for community use is a key component of their efforts. In 2010, the League helped build their first pavilion in Tuscawilla Park. Families now use it for picnics, birthday parties, special events, and as a great place to spend a Saturday outside.

We are looking forward to being a part of Pints for Parks 2019!
